One of the true strengths of African-Americans has always been PERSEVERANCE: the ability and determination to strive on against seemingly overwhelming odds. Our legacy as a people is built upon our need to adapt to an ever changing, sometimes hostile environment. Despite attempts by some to marginalize black culture, it is important that we control the narrative that is African-American history. African-American artists are often the voice of our community by continuing to motivate, educate and inspire through addressing complex issues in thought provoking ways. Black people must continue to address the issues of racial discrimination, justice inequality and police brutality, yet we must also celebrate innovation, creativity and achievement of African-Americans by preserving our culture through the arts for future generations.
