Elvin Jones was a jazz drummer of the post bebop jazz era. From 1960-1966 he was the drummer for the
John Coltrane Quintet. Elvin's unique sense of timing and polyrhythmic phrasing was a major influence on rock drummers like Mitch Michell from the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Ginger Baker from the Cream. Other musicians of note that played with Elvin Jones are trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Jan Hammer, saxophonist Sonny Fortune, and John Coltrane's son, Ravi Coltrane.
