John Coltrane is one of the most significant tenor saxophonist in jazz history. Early in his career he played with jazz notables Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk. Coltrane helped pioneer modal jazz, a form of jazz which uses musical modes rather than chord progressions as a harmonic framework for composing music. Later in his career, John Coltrane was at the forefront of the avante' guard / free jazz movement.
